Friends and family of the late Walter “Ed” Vizthum are using a game he loved to benefit his alma mater.

The inaugural Drink ‘n’ Shoes Horseshoe Tournament is Saturday, July 14 followed by a beef and beer at the Margate Log Cabin, 600 Jerome Ave to benefit the Walter “Ed” Vizthum Scholarship Fund, created by his friends and family to honor his legacy.

The Horseshoe tournament begins at 10 a.m. and is $40 per player and $75 for teams of two including T-shirt and beef and beer beginning at noon. Advance registration required for horseshoe tournament. Register here. Tickets to the beef and beer only are $25 including food and entertainment. The rain date is Sunday, July 15.

Vizthum’s large heart gave out on him at 32-years-old on Aug. 28, 2017. The Absecon native left behind two newborn twin girls and a deep hole in the hearts of his many friends and family members.

The scholarship fund was created to provide assistance to incoming freshmen at Holy Spirit High School beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, academic merit, an essay contest and letter of recommendation.

“Ed loved playing horseshoes as much as he loved going to and playing football at Holy Spirit High School,” said event organizer Shaun Smith of Ventnor. “He would have been 33 on July 10 this year and it’s also been 15 years since we graduated from Spirit. This seemed like a great way to get everyone together to celebrate a good man that we lost too soon.”

The Schroeder Law Group in Hammonton, The Cove in Brigantine, Colmar True Value Home Center and Sparkable in Atlantic City have all signed on as sponsors. Sponsorships are available. See here for sponsorship and ticket information.
